The Multi Asset Investing Team (MAIT) is responsible for many of the larger, more complex funds managed by SLI, including the GARS absolute return funds, the Standard Life plc Group funds and over 100 balanced / segregated pension funds for external clients.
Within MAIT, the Strategy team is responsible for forming the House View to guide the decision making process of other fund managers within SLI, the senior decision makers at Standard Life Plc as well as SLI's external clients, both wholesale and institutional. The team consists of a number of economists, market strategists and research analysts, who work closely with other experts in MAIT eg on Risk as well as the various fund management teams, eg property research or fixed income, credit or equity analysis.
The economist positions will report to the Head of Global Strategy, who in turn reports to the Head of MAIT and Fixed Income. Both are members of the Global Investment Group (GIG) which forms the top most House View at SLI. One senior international economist who focuses on North America is currently based in the Montreal office.
Role Purpose The team of economists are responsible for:
a) analysing the key economies with a specific focus on the USA, the Eurozone, China, Japan, the UK, and other major emerging economies;
b) making macro-economic forecasts of the key economic indicators over different time frames;
c) contributing research reports on economic issues to the GIG, to SL Group and to the fund managers;
d) writing articles for the Global publications series and external trade press in order to raise the profile of SLI;
e) making presentations to current and prospective clients on the House View and broader economic matters;
F) contributing research ideas to the Global Tactical Asset Allocation team and to the GARS fund team within MAIT.
The aim is to have two or more economists, one to focus on OECD economies, especially the UK and Europe, and one to focus on emerging markets, especially China and Asia. These would coordinate international economics coverage with the North Amercian economist based in Montreal. As a result, a considerable degree of travel is probable for one or both positions.

• Ensure a sufficient understanding of the House View amongst internal contacts eg the MAIT, SLI fund managers or SL Group
• Create good media contacts as measured by press office surveys
• Conduct high quality engagement with SLI clients
Key Knowledge/Experience/Qualifications/Skills Essential:
• Minimum of 5 years experience as an international economist • Sound understanding of the interaction between economics and financial markets
• Excellent research and written communication skills
• Ability to make House View presentations to a range of clients in different countries
• Ability to work in a small team in a collaborative manner
• Ability to work within a complex business environment and gain the support and confidence of a wide variety of people
